OUR MISSION
Education is an essential part of developing our base and potential base into the kind of organization that is required for us to realize the goal of building an active Green Party and electing thousands in the 2020s.
Produce materials and events for popular political education on ecosocialism, independent politics, policy issues, and organizing skills and strategies.
Informational. Political. Practical.
There are plenty of outlets that provide a socialist perspective or opinion, but very few of them follow through with that education and connect it with organizing. Our goal is that all of our programs inform, convey a Green Socialist political perspective, and provide an outlet for independent organizing towards real solutions to the life and death issues we face.

Green Socialist Workshops Archive
Since our founding, following the 2020 presidential campaign, the Green Socialist Organizing Project has put out a wide range of educational and training workshops. Whether about tech and systems or political theory or issues education, our workshops seek to further important conversations, inform our audience, and provide Green Socialist organizers with the tools needed to organize effectively in their communties.
101 Series Workshops
4th Tuesday of the Month at 8 PM ET
Streaming on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Twitch
As we work towards our goal of building the Green Socialist movement into a force that can elect thousands to local office into the 2020s, we understand that means welcoming new supporters and developing new organizers who can build power in their communities. For those new to our movement, that means we want to find ways to help you understand our party, how it operates, what it believes in, and most importantly how to get involved.
Campaign Trainings
One of our goals at the Green Socialist Organizing Project is to help Greens improve their campaigns, from internal operations to knowledge on key issues. To that end, the Green Socialist Organizing Project’s Education Working Group is developing a series of workshops to develop Green candidates and their teams. These trainings will be divided into two types, the more traditional nuts and bolts of running a successful campaign and policy trainings on key issues. The hope for the issue trainings is that they will provide Green candidates and their teams with an understanding of Green positions on key issues and how our position is differentiated from those of other parties and to begin to develop a common language in how our candidates across the country talk about Green policies.
Systems and Tech Workshops
Following the 2020 campaign, Chris Blankenhorn, the Hawkins/Walker Social Media and Tech Coordinator, did a number of workshops on systems and tech that can help Greens and independent socialists be more effective and efficient organizers. Each workshop focuses on a different area where systems and tech come into play (Party Organizing, Campaigns, and Social Media).
Local Media Guide
Whether local papers, radio, TV, podcasts, or blogs, local media is an important medium for getting out your message and growing your audience of potential supporters. While mainstream national media rarely gives positive coverage to independent political organizing, alternative and local media sources will often cover us, especially if the time is put in to develop relationships with journalists.
Learn how to create a media list, build relationships with local media, get covered, and what to do if the press doesn’t show up in our Local Media Guide.
GREEN SOCIALIST READING LISTS
Reading lists have long been a central part of education programs on the left, helping to build a common political foundation for members of a movement or organization.
Right now our Reading Lists contain some introductory lists from allies, but we will be developing a Green Socialist Reading List and hopefully some issue/topic/theory specific lists as well.
How to Start Reading/Discussion Group
Education events are a key way for organizers to engage with current members and the broader community, as well as establish a common language and vision through prolonged discussion and debate of important issues and strategies. One of the most common types of political education events is the Reading/Discussion Group.
Check out our guide on how to start your own local Reading/Discussion group, including two recorded workshops. From how to get started to how to run the meeting to how to pick your next topic/reading, the guide seeks to make starting your own group as accessible and easy as possible.
The Case for An Independent Left Party
At a time when a newly emerged socialist movement has entered the capitalist Democratic Party, Howie Hawkins, a longtime socialist and Green Party cofounder, makes the case for an independent left party. In this expanded edition of his landmark article, revised and designed into ebook format, Hawkins argues that a mass party of the left should be organized as a dues-paying membership party that is well-funded by a mass membership organized into local branches where members have a voice and power in a grassroots-democratic party structure.
This book serves as a guide for ecosocialists who want to change the capitalist system, not just lobby the capitalists’ political representatives in the Democratic Party.
Green Socialist Policy Papers
Whether our Issues Working Group or our Education Working Group or Howie’s prolific writing, the Green Socialist Organizing Project has been working on various policy papers that can help inform organizers on issues and form the basis for broader education and training resources on the issue. This page will grow over time as our Working Groups produce more Policy Papers.
Organize for a Mass Membership Party
To avoid the political cul-de-sac of choosing between a greater and lesser evil, the left must commit itself to building an independent, membership-based working-class party. Such a third-party insurgency in the United States must be built from the bottom up in two complementary ways. First, it must organize the working-class majority at the bottom of the social structure into a political party that speaks and acts independently for itself. Second, it must mobilize that base to participate in social movement and electoral activities to win and consolidate power and reforms first in cities, then states, and finally in the nation.
